Adopt-A-Restaurant Program launched

I’m launching the first super-official Adopt-A-Restaurant Program in Howard County. Well, assuming I have such authority, that is. Did you know:  Restaurant Week for Howard County starts Monday? I’m supporting this initiative in a community knowledge management sort of way. And I’d like about 10 minutes of your help, if you feel so inclined.
About three [...]

Essie Ecks

There’s JessieX, and then there’s Essie Ecks. Essie Ecks, which when read out loud, sounds a heckuva lot like JessieX, is the name of one of the team players in the Mobtown Mods. Never heard of them? They’re the “Agents of Mayhem” and one of the teams in Charm City Roller Girls League. I just [...]

Comfort among the weird

Last night, I zipped into Baltimore to attend Glitterama, an annual Baltimore variety show offered, this year, at The Creative Alliance. Baltimore, imo, offers fertile ground to quirk, funk and irreverence: all things that add up to support an art scene I find personally engaging.Replete with neo-burlesque, queer puppets, fire dancers and MTV video remakes, [...]

Sex and the Suburbs

Amy Kunkoski, Girl Talk blogger, announces the Girls and the City Sex and the City weekend of events here. Looks fun! Alas, I’m signed up for a hula hoop workshop that same weekend. (Did I just say, “Alas”? Scratch that. It’s more like, “Heck ya!”)

Baltimore Burlesque Heroes Trixie Little and [...]

Tour Dem Parks, Hon

I saw this T-shirt the other night: Tour Dem Parks, Hon. It made me smile. It made me feel a bit sad. It’s for Baltimore’s “get to know your parks” event. See, today – April 26th – is Columbia’s annual BikeAbout event. Don’t ask me for a link to a site providing more information. I’m [...]

Coco’s Butter Cafe

“Wine, cheese, chocolate and jazz.” That’s how someone described Coco’s Butter Café to me. I have yet to make it there myself. How ’bout you? Have you been there? Or heard much about the place?

From their website:
The smooth sounds of jazz provide the ultimate [...]

Wine in the Woods

The annual Wine in the Woods event happens Mid-May, in Symphony Woods, right next to Merriweather Post Pavilion. Admission includes wine tastings, a souvenir wine glass, live music, circus arts performances, and juried arts and crafts. Symphony Woods is a lovely space, and mid-May is a lovely time to enjoy it.
This event is present [...]

Pete’s Snoballs in Oakland Mills

If you’re in Columbia and looking for a sweet neighborhood hangout space, check out Pete’s Snoball stand, at the end of Oakland Mills Road, on the Stevens Forest side of things. (Such a girl with my directions, huh?) Look for the hand-made sign and lots of people milling about. Especially in the early evening, it’s [...]

Sheep & Wool Festival

If you’ve never been to the Sheep & Wool Festival at the Howard County Fairgrounds, I highly recommend it. The event, the sites and the whole phenomenon is, imo, a whole lot more fun than might appear by the festival title. I’m not much of a journalist or descriptive writer, so cut me some slack [...]
