Trenchant observations.

Trenchant observations … Smart and spry.
That’s how my blog and I were described in today’s Balt Sun article about Howard County bloggers. Smart and spry I understood. Trenchant, while it sounded good, I had to look up on m-w.com. So, first, if you’re here reading my blog because of the article, welcome. May I offer [...]

Adopt-A-Restaurant Program launched

I’m launching the first super-official Adopt-A-Restaurant Program in Howard County. Well, assuming I have such authority, that is. Did you know:  Restaurant Week for Howard County starts Monday? I’m supporting this initiative in a community knowledge management sort of way. And I’d like about 10 minutes of your help, if you feel so inclined.
About three [...]

Martinis and rum ball cookies

The last hocoblogs BlogTale party of 2008 is coming up. Sunday, 12/21 at the Second Chance Saloon in the OM Village Center. For those so inclined, the OM Cookie Swap Spectacular follows, and is right next door. Well-behaved kids are most welcome to join the party(ies).
Cherie is my co-host. We’ll be selling some of our [...]

Dot by dot, reconnecting

I spent almost the entire day working on my personal database and invitations for a Living Locally party I’m co-hosting in June. Oh my goodness. How tedious, time-consuming and, well, really informative it is to go through this process. Who do I want to invite? Why? Are they in my weak social tie circles? My [...]

Loladex – Local recommendations and social media

‘Tis in beta and being tested in the DC area by a DC tech startup. Loladex offers you an opportunity to recommend and rate local businesses. And it has a social media component. Yay. What a great way to promote local businesses you like. As well, you can communicate within your local social network and [...]

The cry to “support local businesses” …

This week’s Flier includes a number of letters to the editor registering support for Produce Galore these many years. A number of the letters also implore folk to buy local and support locally owned stores.
I concur. As long as the local store provides great service and/or products, of course. In support of the vision and [...]

HocoBlogs planet page just launched

Hey, if you like your news local and personal, you may want to bookmark a new site: HocoBlogs.com. This planet page of local bloggers was just launched today. The creator of ezColumbia.com, Robin Abello, and I have been working on this site for the past couple of months.
Expect tweaking and new features. And, please, send [...]

Some call it Laptop Alley.

I call it Columbia’s Catwalk.
They call it The Ranch.
Can you guess what I’m talking about? It’s the Dobbin Road Starbucks, one of the most happenin’ social, fashion and coworking scenes in lil ol’ Columbia, Maryland.
See, I call the place Columbia’s Catwalk because of the brilliance in the store’s design: all incoming customers are channeled [...]

Category Killer? Or Creator?

National chain stores, especially big box stores, are often called “category killers,” as they stomp out local competition when they come to town. A few years back, a friend of mine said he thought of Starbucks (which now opens six new stores a day!) more as a “category creator” rather than a “category killer.” His [...]

Buy Local Baltimore

Other than the fact that their ad copy uses a hyphen with an adverb (independently-owned), I genuinely support such buy-local campaigns. Their Guide to Locally-Owned (sic) Independent Businesses is now for sale.
Anyone know if we have anything along these lines in HoCo? Or even plans to have anything similar? We’re probably best off first directing [...]
