Samurai Hooper

I’m on my way to becoming a samurai hula hooper. Well, I took my first steps when I attended a Hoop Path workshop this weekend. The rest will be up to me, my diligence, my practice and hopefully, hooping with more people who know the Hoop Path style and way.

Really, I can’t imagine a better way to spend a muggy Saturday — one of the first of the season — than being inside an un-air-conditioned studio, wearing jeans, and hooping for almost three hours. It was fabulous, that is, once I accustomed to the fact that I was just drenched in sweat and there was little to be done about my condition. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one. Though the workshop was in Baltimore at MICA (lovely building!), hula hoop rock stars and aficionados came from DC, Virginia and even NYC.

Baxter, in the video below, and the Hoop Path instructors have more of a moving meditation approach to hooping. Which I prefer. Fluidity. Control. Creativity. Mindfulness. Playfulness. Groovin’. What’s not to love about hooping?

Big thanks to hoopers Michelle and Breken for initiating the workshop and arranging for the space.
