Mayorga: Coffee, Computers and Conversation

mayorga-coffee.gifI met a friend this weekend at Mayorga Coffee in Silver Spring. It’s an easy place for a Columbian, such as myself, to meet friends who live closer to, but not in, DC.

I like the place. And the people there. I find it a very suburban Maryland GenX kind of environment. Tech. Hip. Quiet. Functional. Not too fancy. And definitely not boring. While there are a number of Mayorga locations in the area, it’s hardly akin to a nationally owned coffee shop chain.

Every time I’ve been to Mayorga, a good three-fourths of the folk have laptops out and are working. It’s an amazing scene. Yes, yes. I know, people have their laptops out at Starbucks and other coffee shops around town: Orinoco, Riverside, Mad City. But the vibe at Mayorga is completely different. The space is open and wide. It’s comfortable but functional. And there are lots of little cubbyhole spaces for smaller groups to have a bit of intimacy. There’s sort of a quiet agreement there. That people, while socializing to some extent, are also considerate in allowing others the space and place to do their work.

I just like it and recommend it as a great place to work.
